SiPM technology applied to radiation sensor development

چکیده
The Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) being yet in its infancy, a full protocol for the sensor characterization has been developed and implemented at the Physics Department of Universita’ dell’Insubria. Sensors from different producers have been analyzed and compared, in view of the integration in the instruments for radiation detection. Exemplary illustrations are reported here, together with the first results on real-time dosimetry in mammography. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamic range extension of SiPM detectors with the time-gated operation.
The silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) is a novel detector technology that has undergone a fast development in the last few years, owing to its single-photon resolution and ultra-fast response time. However, the typical high dark count rates of the sensor may prevent the detection of low intensity radiation fluxes. In this article, the time-gated operation with short active periods in the nanosecon...
متن کاملHigh - speed visible light communication system based on SiPM
Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) is a photodetector with very high sensitivity, fast response and good performance in oversaturation conditions. When SiPM faces incident optical radiation (sometimes imperceptible for other photodetectors) is able to detect very small variations of light. In this work, we present a SiPM-based optical receiver ables to discriminate small light signals from backgrou...
متن کاملThe front-end electronics for the 1.8-kchannel SiPM tracking plane in the NEW detector
NEW is the first phase of NEXT-100 experiment, an experiment aimed at searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. NEXT technology combines an excellent energy resolution with tracking capabilities thanks to a combination of optical sensors, PMTs for the energy measurement and SiPMs for topology reconstruction. Those two tools result in one of the highest background rejection potentials in the...
متن کاملRadiation hardness of SiPM in the PANDA radiation environment
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) consist of a pixelized array of micrometric avalanche photodiodes (APD) connected in parallel. Their small size and low voltage operation allows the construction of very compact detectors. The price to pay is the megahertz dark count rate at room temperature. These events are generated by thermal electrons within the pixel and are undistinguishable from real sign...
متن کاملCharacterisation of radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers with a Monte Carlo model
Measured response functions and low photon yield spectra of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) were compared to multi-photoelectron pulse-height distributions generated by a Monte Carlo model. Characteristic parameters for SiPM were derived. The devices were irradiated with 14MeV electrons at the Mainz microtron MAMI. It is shown that the first noticeable damage consists of an increase in the rate...
